The GISB Theater Workshop has been led by Uschi Niethammer since February 2007. Due to the growing number of participants, Gudrun Goebel and Anja Schubert are now part of the Drama Club Instructor Team.
The concept of the GISB Drama Club follows a holistic approach. We offer a fun way of working on body concept and coordination, voice and pronunciation as well as text memorization and comprehension. Acting on stage enables our students to discover new aspects in self-perception, to be creative and to express feelings. Students learn in a fun way to interact with each other, they enjoy speaking to each other with new words and sounds.
The GISB Drama Club started in February 2007 with 11 students from grades 4-7. In May 2007, the group mounted their very first performance at the Annual German Theatre Festival and Competition at Mt. Holyoke College. After only a few weeks of rehearsing, the GISB Drama Club won the first prize in the Middle School Division at the Theaterfest at Mount Holyoke College. The participation as well as winning the competition was a wonderful experience for the group.
In 2007-08 school year, 11 students from 4th to 8th grade participated in GISB Theater Workshop. After only 4 weeks of rehearsing, the group performed Theodor Fontane's ballade "Herr von Ribbeck" on the occasion of Ernst Matthiensen's awarding of the Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. For the rest of the school year, the group was preparing "Der kleine Hobbit", an adaption of J.R.R. Tolkien's novel. The drama club performed the first scene of "Der kleine Hobbit" at the Annual German Theatre Festival and Competition at Mt. Holyoke College. With their performance, they won the second place in the Middle School division. On Friday, May 30, 2008, the Theater Group mounted a performance of the entire play Der kleine Hobbit. Ein Theaterstück in elf Bildern. This was the first major production of the drama club in the GISB auditorium.
The GISB Drama Club is currently attended by 17 students from grade 4 to 9. Due to the large group size and the age difference, the participants are rehearsing two different plays in this school year. During rehearsals, we work with the entire group as well as in smaller groups. Students from grades 4 and 5 are rehearsing „Raue See und Roter Teufel. Die Geschichte des Klaus Störtebeker" for a performance at the end of the school year. The 6th to 9th-graders are preparing an adaption of Oscar Wilde's „Das Gespenst von Canterville" for a performance on Friday, February 6, 2009. The two groups support each other in the preparation and realization of their projects. Due to the assistance of two other teachers, the coordination and simultaneous preparation of two plays can be offered to our students in this school year.
